Digital Bias Alert: French Regulator Finds Gender Discrimination in Facebook Jobs Ads

A landmark decision by France’s independent equality watchdog has found that Facebook’s algorithm for job advertisements discriminated by gender, marking a significant moment in the intersection of technology, employment and women’s rights.

The regulator, known as Défenseur des Droits, concluded that job ads for traditionally male-dominated roles , such as mechanics and pilots , were disproportionately shown to men, while roles typically held by women, such as preschool teachers and psychologists, were almost entirely shown to women. This pattern, the watchdog ruled, amounts to indirect discrimination on the basis of sex.

The investigation was initiated following complaints lodged by women’s rights groups including La Fondation des Femmes and Femmes Ingénieurs, in collaboration with global watchdog Global Witness. Their research reported skewed ad targeting behaviour in multiple countries, ultimately triggering the formal probe in France.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has disagreed with the findings and is currently reviewing its practices. The regulator has called on Meta to amend its algorithms and report on improvements within three months. While the decision is not legally binding, it sends a strong signal to technology companies that digital tools must be held accountable for fairness.

This ruling highlights a modern challenge for gender equality: not only must visible barriers be removed, but the invisible ones embedded in algorithms must be addressed too. For many women, the journey to equal opportunity now includes the code behind the ads they see.
