The United Nations General Assembly has officially passed a landmark resolution aimed at protecting women in regions affected by armed conflict and political instability. The resolution—backed by 162 member states—focuses on preventing gender-based violence, increasing the participation of women in peace negotiations, and improving access to humanitarian aid.
The resolution calls on governments and international agencies to:
- Strengthen legal frameworks against wartime sexual violence
- Include women in peacebuilding and security councils
- Increase funding for shelters, trauma care, and rehabilitation services
- Ensure accountability mechanisms for violations of women’s rights
UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous stated that “women are not merely victims of conflict—they are essential to building peace.” The resolution also urges collaboration with grassroots women’s organizations to improve implementation at the community level.
Human rights experts say this move is one of the most decisive global actions since the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security. Implementation efforts are expected to begin in early 2026, with member nations reporting progress annually.
