Media organizations across the globe are calling for urgent protection for women journalists after a wave of coordinated online harassment targeted female reporters from the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

A new report released by UNESCO reveals that seven out of ten women journalists have faced threats or sexualized abuse online in the past year. The report specifically cites incidents in Iran, Nigeria, and the U.K., where journalists covering political and human rights issues have faced organized trolling and doxxing.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated, “Digital spaces have become the new frontline for freedom of expression. Protecting women journalists is protecting democracy itself.”

Social media platforms have been urged to take accountability by developing stronger AI moderation tools and clear reporting systems for targeted gender-based harassment.

The growing hostility toward women in journalism underscores an urgent global challenge , ensuring that truth-telling is not silenced by digital violence. The international community now faces a defining test: whether it can build safer online spaces where women’s voices are not only heard but protected.
